When the term slow fashion was first created it was used to denote quality-based, rather than time-based, fashion. At Mimi Designs, our focus is on smaller-batch collections with zero-waste designs. This means slower production schedules than we may be used to. This is due to each of our pieces being made using the traditional Mexican hand-weaving style which takes on average between four to six weeks per dress. This is the way and style it has been for generations: no machinery, just the weavers with their looms. Our aim is to support the beautiful artisan crafts and way of life as we seek to reduce the textile waste clogging out landfills.
Our dresses take time to create. Cotton must be gathered, natural dyes from flowers, roots and vegetables collected, yarn spun, weaving completed. All this happens around the rhythm of daily life in each of our artisan’s communities. Our relationship with the weavers is one of respect, kindness and inclusion. Almost exclusively women, these weavers bring generations of experience and skill whilst we bring work opportunities as we share their designs with new customers, their history with a broader audience, and work together to preserve their traditions.
The weavers love sharing this part of their culture. There is so much pride when each piece is selected and worn. They are intentional in each design and focused for weeks on one piece at a time to best represent their art. Weaving is their livelihood. These women and men support the entire community and, as the expression goes, a rising tide lifts all ships. As local women and mens' opportunities grow, so too is the entire community elevated.
The Founder
Miriam Michael (Mimi) is an entrepreneur at heart. She loves (and lives in!) color, creativity and is committed to sharing beautiful artisan creations with others.
Her passion for incorporating color and design began as a child, refashioning store bought clothing and continually redesigning her bedroom in bright colors and textiles.
After enjoying many successful years in sales and creating innovative retail store concepts, Miriam began traveling to Mexico, where she fell in love with the people and artisan culture of Oaxaca.
With a commitment to community, purpose and authenticity, Miriam has combined her creative style and her passion for sustainable fashion to create Mimi Designs.
Mimi Designs believes that true luxury in fashion and craft always includes a connection to the elegance, strength and intention of the artist.
Miriam lives with her husband in Southern California, where they love spending time with their children and grandchildren.
